Vehicle checkups this fall can prevent car trouble in the coming winter. Cars need regular checkups and maintenance to maximize safety and efficiency.
October is Car Care Month, and AAA wants drivers to know that the best time to check on your vehicle is the present — before the weather gets colder.
“Whether you’re expecting cooler temperatures, snow, rain or simply a little less sunshine, regular maintenance and seasonal checkups can help prevent unexpected repair costs in the future,” said John Nielsen, director, AAA Automotive Engineering and Repair. “Properly preparing your vehicle for the next season of driving is essential for the safety of all passengers and will greatly decrease the chances of your vehicle letting you down.”
AAA recommends that drivers keep a checklist of winter car care needs.
For Car Care Month, AAA is offering a free battery testing and 10-point vehicle inspection at select AAA Approved Auto Repair facilities. Find a location near you.
Vehicle checkups should also include oil changes, checking tire pressure, maintaining wiper blades, replacing damaged cooling system hoses, checking the air filter and inspecting all lights and fluids.
A driver can inspect many of the items on this list, but a certified mechanic should examine and fix others. Find a quality repair shop through AAA’s Approved repair network. Every AAA- facility undergoes a comprehensive investigation and meets stringent quality standards.
In addition to the repairs listed above, drivers should keep an emergency kit for accidents or severe winter weather. The kit should include a phone charger, water, a first-aid kit, non-perishable snacks, a shovel, salt or sand, blankets, a flashlight, jumper cables, a basic toolkit and warm clothing.
Also, Android and iPhone users can download AAA’s new mobile app, which provides AAA services for all drivers, such as mapping and gas price comparison, as well as member-exclusive benefits including roadside assistance and discounts.
Preventative maintenance now can save you from getting stranded on the side of the road later. Check up on your car at one of these AAA-approved Auto Repair Facilities. Plus, save 10 percent on car service and parts with an AAA membership.
